Mary Seacole and The Lady With The Lamp

What your students will learn:

1) The contribution Mary Seacole and Florence Nightingale made to the Crimean War, including where they both came from and why they wanted to help in the war effort.

2) The discrimination Mary and Florence faced at the time. Including the economic struggles Mary faced, and the societal pressures Florence faced.

3) The aftermath of the war, and how Mary Seacole wrote a book, and Florence Nightingale started a Nursing School in London.

Performance techniques they’ll be using:

1) They will use drama, mime and music to explore the story of Mary Seacole and Florence Nightingale. Creating ‘moving timelines’ to re-enact the story of their lives.

2) They will use drama and roleplay to investigate the different emotions felt by Mary and Florence.

3) Using their knowledge gained during the workshop, they will use characterisation and drama to create a documentary style performance, telling the story of Mary and Florence’s lives after the war. Noticing key differences in how they were (or were not) remembered for their efforts.
